Acciaierie d'Italia and Fincantieri: competences at the service of Italian steel

11/06/2021

This partnership is a great occasion for the city of Taranto and for our entire Country: we are ready to give a real contribution to the overhaul of the integral cycle of Acciaierie d’Italia with technologies environmentally compatible. A transition to which Fincantieri can give an important contribution”.

Andrea Donadon, Head of Industrial Efficiency at Fincantieri, explains in an interview the goals of the cooperation between two of the largest Italian companies, aimed at a full decarbonization. “A journey on which Fincantieri is extremely committed: within the Group there are several technologies, at different steps of experimenting, aimed at reducing the ecological footprint of our activities. I refer to fuel cells, le batteries, internal combustion engines and turbines fueled both with gas and hydrogen”.

Within the agreement signed on April 13 2021, that sees Fincantieri in the role of general contractor and Paul Wurth Italy that one of technology provider, “we can offer our experience in the management of complex orders, multidisciplinary and with high added value, such for example the shipbuilding, that represents since ever our core business”, tells Donadon, who adds: “we demonstrated our capability to manage projects also in fields different from the naval one – just think to the recent order for the re-construction of the bridge in Genoa”.

Under this aspect, the participation of Fincantieri to the new era at Acciaierie d’Italia will start from the evaluation of feasibility of the projects, with special attention to “costs, time and investments, in a view of integration of all the project management activities”.

Steel will obviously occupy the central stage in this partnership: “All begins from steel” tells Donadon “which is a key component for the majority of industrial products and projects, such as building a ship. Our ambition is the creation of a sustainable value chain for this material. By properly producing and selecting steel, it is possible non only to abate the products environmental impact, but also to increase their performance”.

High performing steel represent one of the most interesting fields for Fincantieri and its future projects: “High resistance steel allows to reduce the thickness and therefore the weight of a vessel, to abate energy consumption and the related emissions”, Donadon explains, adding that “the usage of high performing steel gives further benefits across the production chain: less volumes ordered, less material to be transported, less space needed for storage, less working time. This resources rationalization, along with the digitalization, represents the main avenue to reduce the environmental impact of our ship yards”.

Thanks to the cooperation with Acciaierie d’Italia, Fincantieri would be able to “use in the best ways the usage of high performing steel both in the shipbuilding and in the infrastructures”, while it will also allow us to “ensure the needed competitiveness to the Taranto plant in order to reach the goals of competitiveness, business and sustainability that Acciaierie d’Italia set for the years to come”.

The deal was conceived to bear fruit in a systemic perspective, with the vision of a consolidation of one of the most important production chain of the Italian industry, made possible thanks to the simultaneous presence of three champions such as Fincantieri, Paul Wurth Italia and Acciaierie d’Italia: “the cooperation between these three great groups will allow us to implement valuable operative synergies and we firmly believe that it will offer the Country a virtuous model for the restarting of the economy”, Donadon concludes.
