INSIGHT | Responsibility: a matter of ethics and competence

11/06/2021

The event “New nourishment for steel”, that took place at Acciaierie d’Italia in Taranto on June 10th  2021, witnessed the signing of the agreement with Istituto Tecnico Superiore “A. Cuccovillo” of Bari for the creation of a two year course in Advanced Mechatronics for the Innovation of the Steel Industry. Among personalities attending the Assessor of Education, Training and Labor of the Puglia Region Sebastiano Leo, the Chairwoman of ITS "A. Cuccovillo” Lucia Scattarelli, the Director of ITS Roberto Vingiani, Lucia Morselliand Human Resourches Head of Acciaierie d'Italia Arturo Ferruci.

It’s a partnership of special relevance aimed at establishing a virtuous relationship with the territory starting from the education of younger people, enhancing the portfolio of competences of the people of Acciaierie d’Italia, who will participate to the courses as trainers.

The two-year course, supported by the Puglia Region is in the running to become the site of a ‘baton passing’ between generations, who together will accompany Acciaierie d’Italia towards Industry 4.0 and the energetic efficiency.

The event was also the occasion for a get together between the managers of Acciaierie d’Italia and a large group of students from the Superior Technical Institutes, representing the very people that in the future will be called to give their contribution to the ecologic transition of the Italian steel industry.

Just before the press conference, the CEO of Acciaierie d’Italia Lucia Morselli asked attending girls and boys a question that tells much about the company expectations from the cooperation between the school and the academic universes.

“What does responsibility mean to you? And what responsibility is intended to within a company?”

The answers released during the event touched several issues of great interest. There was who pointed out that responsibility is the capability to do at best one’s duty” and who introduced the component of “Respect for other people, without the need of a rule or a person imposing it”. There were also observations concerning the close link that responsibility has with accepting the consequences of our actions, “of which we are indeed responsible”, and it was not forgotten the self-fulfillment aspect, that is the capacity to be “aware of one’s contribution.”

But the answer that most touched the partners of the initiative was the one that described the concept even more in-depth: “Responsibility means take decisions, putting oneself out here. The decisions we take since we are kids that allow to become the person we are. And companies seek persons that take their responsibility whatever they do”.

During the meeting with the youngsters, Lucia Morselli unveiled her point of view on the concept of responsibility: “the best classified answer seemed to me very coherent with my own idea of responsibility. Over my career, I understood that having responsibility means being able to give the right answers to whom ask you for them. When you are in a big company such as Acciaierie d’Italia and many others I worked with, you are surrounded by people who rightly ask you so many questions. The duty of a responsible worker and manager is mainly this: give answers with competence and full awareness”.

The start of the new course organized by Acciaierie d’Italia and ITS “A. Cuccovillo” will therefore be the occasion for building together a contemporary company culture, sensitive to the issues of sustainability and solidarity, capable to kick off a revolutionary step change, both for the steel and the entire Italian industry.
