Bari, May 29th 2026 – As part of the series “Chemistry Thursdays – Chemical Expertise and Sustainability for the Future,” organized by the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bari Aldo Moro in collaboration with the Chemistry Section of Confindustria Bari and BAT, Acciaierie d’Italia in Extraordinary Administration participated yesterday by hosting the seminar “Chemistry in the Steel Industry: Application Cases,” aimed at students.
The seminar, held at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Bari, offered—thanks to the participation and insights of experts and company managers—an opportunity to discuss how, in industrial practice, chemical expertise contributes to the development and improvement of processes and products, with a focus on safety, innovation, and sustainability.
Acciaierie d’Italia’s participation is part of the Framework Collaboration Agreement signed with UniBa in April 2025, aimed at the joint development of applied research, innovation, and technical-scientific training, to foster synergy between academia and industry and to enhance local expertise. “The collaboration with the University of Bari Aldo Moro strengthens a strategic hub for applied research in support of process and product innovation and research on the circular economy, green transition, and digital transformation. Bringing together academic expertise and industrial capabilities allows us to develop concrete projects that enhance and strengthen the connection between the factory and the local area", stated Extraordinary Commissioner Giancarlo Quaranta of Acciaierie d’Italia in E.A.
The agreement, promoted by the School of Science and Technology and involving all 19 departments of the University, aims to strengthen the dialogue between the university and the business community through the development of research projects, the launch of internship and thesis programs, science outreach initiatives, and the organization of seminars and training activities. Key areas of focus include, in particular, the circular economy, energy and environmental efficiency, and process innovation, with the goal of fostering solutions and expertise aligned with the needs of the industrial sector and the Apulia region.
The partnership also highlights the Research and Development Center at the Taranto plant as a facility supporting joint experimentation and training activities. This commitment was further underscored by a visit to the Research and Development Center last February by a delegation from the University of Bari Aldo Moro, led by Rector Prof. Roberto Bellotti and including, among others, General Director Prof. Ernesto Somma, Vice Rector Prof. Vito Peragine, and Sustainability Officer Prof. Francesco Gentile. “The collaboration with Acciaierie d’Italia aligns with the University’s mission to promote applied research and training, fostering concrete opportunities for students and researchers and contributing to the transfer of skills and knowledge,” stated Rector Prof. Roberto Bellotti. “Initiatives like this reinforce the value of ongoing dialogue and the prospect of further developing the collaboration”.
