Eurofer, the European steel association, visiting the Taranto plant of Acciaierie d’Italia

Taranto, 18 April 2023 – On April 18th, Acciaierie d'Italia received a visit at the Taranto plant from a high-level delegation of EUROFER, the European Steel Association. The delegation was led by the Director General, Axel Eggert.

Acciaierie d'Italia was represented by the Chief Executive Officer Lucia Morselli and the General Manager for Quality, Research and Sustainable Development Adolfo Buffo, supported by the plant managers and ADI technicians who take part in the various EUROFER Working Groups.

During the visit, EUROFER delegation was able to see the numerous environmental and technological interventions carried out at the Taranto plant and also visited the new areas dedicated to training, research and development.

Acciaierie d'Italia and EUROFER discussed about industrial and technological issues and future market scenarios, in a context where steel has its strategic role confirmed in the European economy, also with reference to climate neutrality. As EUROFER repeatedly pointed out in the recent past, the value chains of clean technologies depend on steel and an EU industrial policy is needed in order to put steel companies in a position to invest in green technologies, while remaining competitive at global level.

“We have had an exchange of great interest with EUROFER, as we always do. We are facing big technological and environmental challenges, which can only be tackled with a view to collaboration and exchange of expertise and best practices at international level”, stated Lucia Morselli, CEO of Acciaierie d'Italia. “These events are very important for discussing possible evolutions in the sector and receiving feedback on the undertaken path", concluded Morselli.

“Taranto is one of the most important steel plants of the EU, and the only primary steel site in Italy. It is a vital asset for the EU's and Italy's strategic autonomy and resilience, for innovation, employment and prosperity for a whole region.

The environmental efforts made in the last years are impressive and its sustainable development towards green steel production reflects the work we carry out at the European Steel Association to decarbonise the EU steel sector, further improve circularity and reach climate-neutrality”, said Axel Eggert, Director General of the European Steel Association (EUROFER).

However, he pointed out, “the green transition will be successful only with the right conditions in place as soon as possible both at EU and national level, notably access to affordable fossil-free energy, funding support for capital and operational expenditures of low-carbon steel projects, level playing field measures to maintain European steel competitive, and incentives for customers to use green steel”.
