Increase in benzene levels in no way attributable to the iron and steel plant

20/01/2023

Taranto, 20th January 2023 – With reference to the news reported by Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno newspaper, Acciaierie d'Italia confirms that it has provided plenty and documented evidence to ARPA Puglia that the increase in benzene levels would in no way be attributable to the iron and steel plant, which in fact fully complies with the emission limits, also thanks to the completed implementation of the requirements relating to coking batteries (with an investment of over 120 million euros). Therefore, considering these circumstances, ADI noted that it would be reasonable to evaluate and verify whether there are other possible sources of an increase in the detection of benzene. Finally, ADI however highlighted that the concentration levels detected in the control units of the urban area in the years 2020, 2021 and 2022 stayed well below the limit set by Legislative Decree 155/2010.
