ITS La Spezia Foundation and Acciaierie d'Italia sign an agreement to establish a course in “Advanced Mechatronics for the innovation of the steel industry”

15/12/2021

Genoa, 15th December 2021 -The Training Center of Acciaierie d'Italia on 1st December 2021 formalized a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Genoa for collaborations on educational activities, career guidance, research and development and environmental sustainability in sectors of common interest.

Today, Acciaierie d'Italia and the ITS La Spezia Foundation signed an agreement to start an ITS course in “Advanced Mechatronics for the innovation of the steel industry”, related to the national professional figure of “Higher Technician for automation and mechatronic systems”.

The result is the 1st two-year course, governed by a specific notice, which will involve 25 students at the Training Center within the Genoa plant which, in an innovative way, will train super-technicians specialized in advanced automation.

The start of the course is scheduled for 7th February 2022 and the selection of participants will be held on Tuesday 25th January at the Training Center of Acciaierie d’Italia in Genoa.

Acciaierie d'Italia operates in various sites in Northern Italy, and in particular has an important plant based in Genoa and Novi Ligure on which investments are planned in the aspects of automation, production efficiency, operator safety and environmental sustainability, as well as those in the professional skills of human resources.

The training objectives of the course can be acquired thanks to the continuous relationship with a team of teachers, tutors, company technicians ready to transmit their know-how, and to the structures made available by Acciaierie d'Italia, which will allow students to have a real experience “on the field”.

Indeed, the strong commitment of Acciaierie d'Italia, ITS La Spezia Foundation and Liguria Region continues in the design of a training offer strongly oriented to the labor market, with increasingly advanced and modern paths capable of responding to the specific professional needs of the territory. The course, entirely funded by the Department of Social and Health Policies, School, University and Training of the Liguria Region, makes use of the model of alternation between training sessions "in the classroom" and training moments "in working contexts" which allows many students to learn directly on the field, without neglecting the theoretical training in the classroom with teachers provided with the highest profile.

Through mechatronics it is possible to make production efficient and flexible, reduce the exposure of operators to dangerous processes and manage the environmental impact through the optimization and control of individual emission factors, all under an integrated control through computerized systems and well distributed sensors.

The course was presented during a meeting where the Agreement was signed by the CEO of Acciaierie d'Italia Lucia Morselli, the President of the ITS "La Spezia" Foundation Roberto Guido Sgherri and the Councilor for Education, Training and University of the Liguria Region Ilaria Cavo. The General Manager of Confindustria Genoa, Guido Conforti was also present.

"The way of producing steel is evolving and this evolution requires increasingly complex skills for which the contribution of young people trained by ITS La Spezia is of great importance. This Institute is able to provide highly qualified technical personnel to meet the needs of Liguria industrial excellence", commented Lucia Morselli, CEO of Acciaierie d’Italia.

"As President of ITS La Spezia, I enthusiastically accepted Acciaierie's proposal to become a member of the La Spezia Foundation and I supported Acciaierie d'Italia's investment in training with equal enthusiasm. The ITS course designed together is indeed perfectly integrated with the objectives of our Foundation, considering that the value and sustainability of the intervention is connected to the quality and preparation of human resources "said Roberto Guido Sgherri, President of the ITS La Spezia Foundation.

"This is a course, funded by the Por-European Social Fund which confirms the Liguria Region’s trust in the super-technical training of ITS and in those paths which, as in this case, are based on agreements between the training institution and a company committed to hiring. The investment in training, in this specific case, will serve to provide new professional skills for an efficiency of production in terms of safety and management of the environmental impact and, in part, for the reconversion of personnel. Supporting the advanced mechatronics figure for the innovation of industry and steel is a way to look forward both by involving graduates in the courses that will start and by specializing the skills of employees to whom a quota of at least five places is reserved for three courses" added Ilaria Cavo, Councilor for Education of the Liguria Region.
